2022 has been the year that, on the face of it, things returned to some semblance of ‘normal’.
We put the events of the last few years aside and started making plans again.
One of the ways we did this was by hopping on a plane.
While we weren’t quite at pre-pandemic levels – possibly because of the cost-of-living crisis – with around 45% making a holiday abroad between September 2021 and August 2022, we’ve still been dreaming of jetting off.
If you’re among those who are making travel plans, it’s likely you’re working out how you can cover the cost of your journey.
To do this, you’ll need to look at how to make money, both before you set off and while you’re abroad.
Here’s a look at some travel funding ideas that are designed to set you up for your big adventure.

Save up
First up, look at your savings.
If you’ve been thinking of travelling for a while, you’ve probably been saving for a while.
If not, it’s worth setting aside some time to save up enough to cover the basics while you’re travelling.
You could try having a clear out and selling things you don’t need anymore or if you have any skills you could use these as a side hustle to your day job.
For instance, you might do freelance photography or be skilled at crafts that you could sell on sites like Etsy.
Ideally, you’ll need enough savings for plane tickets and your living costs for at least your first three months away.
The more you save, the more prepared you’ll be.
Money Spinning Ideas
Depending on the country you’re heading to, savings are likely to run out pretty quickly.
Therefore, you’ll need to have an idea of how you’ll pay your way while you’re travelling.

There are plenty of ways to make money while you’re abroad, however:
- Fruit picking – Popular spots for travellers are typically well-prepared for those who are working on a temporary visa. Australia, for example, has a large fruit picking operation that’s populated by travellers who are earning while they’re in the country.
- Trading – Trading is another possibility. This is good choice for travellers as it can be done at different times of the day, thanks to different markets opening in different time zones, and on-the-go, thanks to everything being accessible via mobile devices.
There are demo accounts where you can have a trial run before getting into the real thing. If you’re already familiar with the markets, you might want to try your hand at CFD trading.
- Teach a language – You might want to look into teaching English abroad with this TEFL course online. This can be a hugely beneficial way to raise money and it’s a great addition to your CV for when you return.
- Sell modelling photos – While it might not be for everyone there’s a market for the body, some slightly more unique than others. From hand modelling to those that buy feet pics, there’s a lot of money that can be made while you’re on your travels.
Whatever you decide to do, be sure to plan a budget.
Have a figure in mind and try to stick to it.
By planning ahead, you could find that you can extend your travels and see even more of the world.
