As the nights start to draw in – yes, it’s far too soon, but it’s happening! – you might find yourself counting the days until you can no longer linger outside, enjoying the balmy evenings as you watch the stars pop into the sky.

But you can keep on sitting out until winter is well established if you learn how to create a cosy backyard firepit area.

Think comfortable seating, warm blankets, and soft lighting including a firepit from Forest Fuel Store – and you can soon get creative with your outdoor space.

Here are some tips to make sure you and your guests and family are happy to be outdoors, well into autumn and maybe even beyond.

Grow a Wind-Break!

So often it is not the ambient temperature in a garden that is the problem – but the wind chill.

You can take steps in early spring and summer to fend off the chill of autumn and winter by planting a thin line of tall plants that will block or soften the wind cutting across your outdoor seating area.

This built-in windbreak will then effortlessly guide the wind around your seating area, instantly making you and your guests much warmer.

Keep Things Comfy

Invest a little in buying a good set of garden furniture, preferably with cushions or upholstery (weatherproofed, of course) that will be comfortable to sit on for hours.

If your furniture is hard on your rear, it doesn’t matter what the weather is like, no one will want to spend time outside!

And ensure that everything is warm by getting a chiminea or fire pit so that you can keep everyone toasty warm, even on the chilliest, grey November day.

You can get small, portable chimineas to move around as you like, or bigger, permanently sited ones that you can all cluster around to while away many pleasant sociable hours.

Make a Light Path

In December, we only get about eight hours of daylight, with the sun coming up at 7am and going down by 3pm on the shortest day.

Make sure that this doesn’t curtail your celebrations by filling your garden – especially the seating area – with solar lights, strings of fairy lights, and even early Christmas decorations to add sparkle and brightness to even the darkest corners.

In this way, you can sit out until full dark has fallen, enjoying the banter and gossip with your family and friends.

Be Safe

Sadly, even the nicest area can be a target for the unscrupulous thieves, so make sure that your outdoor seating area is secure, fenced off from roads and easy access.

That way, you and your guests can relax completely while you are socialising, leaving doors unlocked so you can all use the loo, top up drinks or bring out fresh snacks, without having to lock and unlock doors.

Set up motion sensor lights around the perimeter of the garden, so anyone trying to sneak in to spoil the party will quickly be spotted and – hopefully – deterred from their nefarious plans!

Final Thoughts

Winter is coming, as Game of Thrones told us.

But we don’t need to fear the cold or the dark.

If we remember to plan ahead and fit out the garden ready for guests – you can all enjoy the fun and games right into the autumn and early winter.
